COURSE CURRICULUM

The MRes Health and Care (Allied Health Professions) programme provides students with advanced research training through a series of core modules designed to develop the knowledge and skills required to conduct high-quality health and care research. Core modules include Quantitative Skills for Health and Care Research, Qualitative Skills for Health and Care Research, Methods for Managing Health and Care Research, Evaluating Health and Care Interventions and the Independent Research Project for Health and Care, alongside optional opportunities to study Evidence Based Health and Care Practice Projects and Ethical and Scientific Standards for Health and Care Research. The Quantitative Skills for Health and Care Research module plays a central role in developing students' ability to understand, design and evaluate quantitative studies commonly used within health and care settings. Students gain advanced knowledge of research methodologies including randomised controlled trials, experimental designs and other quantitative approaches relevant to allied health professions and clinical research. The module explores the strengths and limitations of different study designs and develops the ability to critically appraise research evidence and assess its relevance to professional practice. Students learn to analyse and interpret quantitative findings using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques while examining key concepts such as hypothesis testing, sampling strategies, statistical power, randomisation and blinding procedures used to improve research validity and reliability. The philosophical foundations of quantitative methodologies are also explored, enabling students to understand how research assumptions influence data collection, analysis and interpretation. In addition, students develop skills in reporting quantitative findings within scientific and professional contexts while considering barriers and facilitators to implementing experimental research in healthcare environments. The module also encourages reflection on personal learning needs and supports the ongoing development of research expertise, preparing graduates to undertake independent research projects, contribute to evidence-based practice and influence future developments in health and care services.
