COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Applied Theatre programme combines theoretical study, practical experience and professional engagement to develop advanced skills in socially engaged theatre practice and community arts. The core Applied Theatre Context and Work Based Learning module provides students from a range of academic and professional backgrounds with a strong foundation in the history, theories and methodologies of Applied Theatre. Students critically explore the contributions of influential practitioners such as Dorothy Heathcote, Brian Way, Viola Spolin and Augusto Boal, alongside contemporary scholars and practitioners, to understand how theatre can support education, behavioural change and social transformation. Through work-based learning and professional shadowing opportunities, students gain experience within community and cultural organisations, applying theory to practice in real-world environments. Placements may involve working with groups such as refugees, children in care, people with disabilities, prison communities or older adults through partnerships with local organisations and community projects. Students engage in observation, participation and reflective practice while maintaining logs and diaries to critically evaluate their experiences and professional development. Alongside this core module, students study Performance Practice as Research, which develops advanced creative and research skills through practice-based enquiry, and complete an Independent Study Major Project that allows them to specialise in an area of personal or professional interest. Optional modules enable students to broaden their expertise in areas including leadership and management, coaching and mentoring, learning theories, special educational needs and disabilities, educational innovation, childhood studies and inclusion. The programme emphasises creativity, collaboration, reflexivity and adaptability while preparing graduates for careers in theatre, education, community arts, cultural organisations and socially engaged creative practice.
