COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) curriculum provides a comprehensive balance of theoretical knowledge, practical teaching skills, and independent research to prepare students for professional roles in English language education. The programme begins with Language Learning: Theory and Practice, where students explore key theories of language acquisition and examine how these inform effective teaching strategies. Contemporary Debates in Applied Linguistics develops critical understanding of current issues, research, and emerging trends influencing language teaching and learning in diverse educational settings. Research and Innovation in Education equips students with advanced research skills, enabling them to investigate educational challenges, evaluate evidence, and apply innovative approaches to teaching practice. The Principles of English Language Teaching introduces the fundamental methods, techniques, and pedagogical approaches used in TESOL, while Curriculum Pedagogy and Materials Development in English Language Teaching focuses on designing effective curricula, creating engaging learning materials, and selecting appropriate teaching resources to meet the needs of diverse learners. The Changing Contexts of TESOL examines the evolving global landscape of English language education, including multilingualism, cultural diversity, policy developments, and the impact of social, technological, and educational change on teaching practice. The programme concludes with the Extended Education Project, a 60-credit independent research project that allows students to investigate a topic of professional interest, apply advanced research methods, critically evaluate existing literature, and produce a substantial piece of academic work that demonstrates master's-level research, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Together, these core modules develop expertise in language learning theory, applied linguistics, curriculum design, educational research, teaching methodology, and reflective practice while strengthening students' ability to respond to contemporary challenges in English language education.
