COURSE CURRICULUM
The Publishing Profession module provides a comprehensive introduction to the history, development, and contemporary practice of the publishing industry, examining how publishing has evolved over the past 500 years and how it continues to adapt to technological, commercial, and cultural change. Worth 20 credits, this core module explores the role of editors and publishing professionals while considering how globalisation, digital technologies, new business models, and changing distribution channels are reshaping the publishing landscape. Students gain an understanding of the diverse sectors within publishing, including scholarly, academic, educational, and trade publishing, while examining current challenges such as open access legislation, digital transformation, and the growth of international publishing markets. The module also investigates advances in print technologies, including print-on-demand and short-run printing, which have enabled niche publishers and independent businesses to flourish alongside established publishing companies. Students explore the legal frameworks governing publishing, different business structures and commercial models, and the economic factors influencing publishing organisations in a rapidly changing global industry. In addition, the curriculum examines the democratisation of authorship through self-publishing and online publishing platforms, encouraging students to critically evaluate whether these developments complement or challenge traditional publishing practices. Teaching is delivered through lectures, seminars, guided research, tutor-led discussions, and guest presentations from publishing professionals, enabling students to engage with current industry issues while developing critical thinking, research, and analytical skills. Throughout the module, students compare print and digital publishing, exploring how both formats coexist, compete, and influence the future of the industry. By examining the historical foundations, present-day practices, and emerging trends in publishing, students develop a strong understanding of the industry's structure, operations, and future direction. Overall, the module establishes an essential foundation for further study throughout the MA Publishing programme, equipping students with the knowledge, professional awareness, and critical perspective required for careers across editorial, production, marketing, publishing management, and the wider publishing industry.
