COURSE CURRICULUM
The Master’s degree in Journalism includes a combination of core and optional modules designed to develop advanced journalistic knowledge, practical skills, research abilities, and industry awareness. Core modules such as Global Challenges in Journalism explore the major issues shaping contemporary journalism, including changes in media, political developments, social challenges, and the evolving role of journalists in society. Project Modelling and Methods provides students with the research, planning, and analytical skills needed to design and complete successful journalism projects. The Master’s Thesis in Journalism allows students to undertake in-depth independent research on a chosen journalism-related topic, developing their ability to critically analyse sources, investigate issues, and present well-supported arguments. The Major Journalism Project focuses on practical journalism production, enabling students to create substantial professional work while applying advanced reporting, storytelling, and production techniques. Transforming Journalism examines how digital technologies, changing audience behaviours, and new media platforms are reshaping the journalism industry. The PGDip Independent Study module supports further independent learning and research development. Students can also select optional modules to tailor the programme according to their interests and career goals. These options include Audience Studies, which explores how audiences engage with media content; Freelance Journalism, which develops skills for independent journalism careers; Digital Skills, which focuses on modern digital tools and production techniques; Investigating Journalism and Politics, which examines investigative reporting and the relationship between journalism and political systems; Data Journalism and Data Science, which introduces the use of data analysis and visualisation in reporting; and Work Experience in Journalism, which provides opportunities to gain practical industry experience. Together, these modules combine academic study, professional practice, digital innovation, and independent research to prepare graduates for careers across journalism, broadcasting, digital media, investigative reporting, communications, and related fields.
