COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Global Affairs includes two key research-focused modules that develop the advanced academic, analytical, and professional skills required for postgraduate study and careers in international affairs, policy, and research. The Independent Study module provides students with the opportunity to undertake a substantial independent research project on a topic relevant to global affairs, politics, or a related discipline. Throughout the project, students critically engage with contemporary academic debates, evaluate a wide range of scholarly sources, and apply appropriate theoretical and methodological approaches to investigate a complex issue in depth. The module develops advanced project management, research, and critical analysis skills while enabling students to produce a well-structured dissertation that demonstrates coherent argumentation, intellectual independence, and a comprehensive understanding of current theoretical perspectives and research methods. Students also explore how humanities and social science research can inform public understanding and policy, strengthening their ability to communicate complex ideas effectively. These skills provide an excellent foundation for careers requiring research, policy analysis, and strategic thinking, while also preparing graduates for doctoral study. Complementing this, the Researching Global Affairs and Politics module equips students with a comprehensive understanding of research methodologies used across politics, international relations, and related interdisciplinary fields. Through seminars, group discussions, and debates, students examine both qualitative and selected quantitative research methods, learning how different analytical approaches can be applied to contemporary global challenges and public policy issues. The module encourages interdisciplinary thinking, enabling students to evaluate complex international problems from multiple perspectives while developing the practical skills needed to produce evidence-based policy recommendations. Students apply their methodological knowledge by preparing a professional policy paper and developing persuasive writing, presentation, and communication skills. The final assessment takes the form of a conference-style presentation delivered to peers, allowing students to defend and communicate their research findings in a professional academic environment. Together, these modules strengthen students' abilities in independent research, policy analysis, critical thinking, academic writing, project management, and public presentation, providing the advanced knowledge and transferable skills needed for careers in government, diplomacy, international organisations, think tanks, NGOs, research institutions, journalism, and further postgraduate study.
