COURSE CURRICULUM

In the final stage of the MA Film and Television Production programme, students choose between two 60-credit capstone modules that reflect their professional interests and career aspirations. The Creative Project in Film or Documentary provides an opportunity to undertake a substantial practical production, either independently or as part of a collaborative team, while specialising in professional roles such as directing, producing, cinematography, editing, or other areas of film production. Students develop advanced creative and technical skills by planning, producing, and completing a high-quality film or documentary using professional-standard equipment appropriate to their chosen discipline. Throughout the project, they learn how to pitch ideas, present their work within an industry context, engage critically with existing film and documentary practices, and refine their own creative style and aesthetic vision. Continuous guidance and constructive feedback from academic staff, alongside peer collaboration and industry-informed mentoring, support students throughout the creative process while strengthening teamwork, communication, project management, and professional practice. Alternatively, students may choose the Advanced Research Project, which focuses on conducting an extensive and in-depth investigation into the theoretical, historical, and critical dimensions of artistic, photographic, or creative research. This pathway is particularly suitable for students whose interests lie in academic research and critical enquiry rather than practical production and is ideal for those considering progression to practice-based doctoral study. Through independent research, students critically evaluate relevant literature, theories, and historical contexts while examining how these perspectives inform and enhance their own creative practice. Both options represent the culmination of the master's programme, enabling students to demonstrate advanced analytical ability, originality, independent learning, and professional competence. Students following the Scriptwriting pathway also complete specialist modules designed to strengthen their expertise in screenwriting, narrative development, character creation, and script production for film and television. Overall, the final stage allows students to tailor their learning towards either professional creative practice or advanced academic research, ensuring they graduate with specialist expertise, a substantial portfolio or research project, and the skills required for careers in the creative industries or further postgraduate study.
