COURSE CURRICULUM

The Arts Therapies Independent Scholarship: A Body of Work is a 60-credit module that forms a major part of the MA Dramatherapy programme. During the second year of training, students complete an original research project in an area of Dramatherapy that aligns with their personal and professional interests. The project requires students to use an arts-based research methodology, keeping the dramatic art form central to the exploration of their research question. Students receive guidance from academic supervisors and participate in supervision groups throughout the research process. The Independent Scholarship is assessed through three components: a solo performance, a written critical reflection, and a viva voce examination. This approach enables students to combine creative practice with academic research, developing deeper knowledge, reflective skills, and professional understanding of Dramatherapy. The module carries 60 credits, making it a significant element of the overall programme and providing an opportunity for students to produce meaningful, practice-based research. In addition to academic requirements, students must complete 72 sessions of personal therapy during their training, as required by the British Association of Dramatherapists (BADth). The cost of personal therapy is the responsibility of the student and is separate from the standard programme fees. This personal therapeutic experience supports students’ professional development, self-awareness, and ability to work effectively as future dramatherapists.
