COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biology BSc (Hons) programme at the University of Derby is designed to build a strong foundation in biological sciences before progressing to advanced research and specialist study. In the first year, students complete core modules including Bioscience in Practice, Global Citizenship for Bioscientists, Ecology, The Science of Life, Biodiversity and Ecophysiology, and Genetics and Evolution. These modules introduce fundamental biological concepts while developing practical laboratory skills, microbiology techniques, microscopy, aseptic procedures, scientific writing, taxonomy, data analysis, and statistical methods. Students gain experience in conducting experiments, interpreting scientific data, and applying the scientific process from hypothesis development to evidence-based conclusions. During the second year, students strengthen their scientific knowledge through core modules such as Biological Problem Solving, Understanding Life through Data, Invertebrates, and Vertebrate Biology, while selecting optional modules including Biological Basis of Animal Behaviour, Molecular Biology, Adaptation to Environment, Microbial Ecology, or Field Biology. This stage develops research planning, problem-solving, ethical awareness, risk assessment, digital literacy, database searching, data management, work experience, and professional networking skills, preparing students for independent scientific investigation. In the final year, students complete the Independent Studies module, a major research project involving project design, ethical approval, hypothesis formulation, data collection, analysis, interpretation, and scientific reporting. They can further tailor their studies through specialist options such as Behavioural Ecology, Wildlife Conservation, Habitat Management, Applied Entomology, Ecological Consultancy, Tropical Marine Biology, Genomics, Oncology and Immunology, and Science Communication. Throughout the programme, students combine laboratory work, field investigations, research training, and professional development to build practical, analytical, and scientific communication skills. Graduates leave with the knowledge, research experience, and employability skills required for careers in wildlife conservation, ecology, environmental management, biotechnology, scientific research, education, and a wide range of bioscience-related industries.
