COURSE CURRICULUM

The Pharmacology BSc (Hons) at the University of Derby offers a comprehensive curriculum that develops students’ knowledge of drug discovery, human health, disease, and biomedical research through progressive stages of study. In the first year, students complete core modules including Concepts of Human Health and Wellbeing, Anatomy and Physiology, Research and Practical Methods, Clinical Genetics, Introduction to Pharmacology, and Chemistry of Life. These modules provide a strong foundation in human biology, genetics, physiology, pharmacological principles, laboratory techniques, and public health while introducing the role of biomedical sciences in disease diagnosis and healthcare. During the second year, students build on this knowledge through core modules in Human Physiology and Disease, Microbiology, Clinical Immunology, Diagnostic Molecular Biology, Applied Pharmacology Disease, and Professional Skills in Pharmacology. They explore disease mechanisms, microbiology, immune responses, molecular diagnostic techniques, pharmacological treatments, epidemiology, and data analysis while developing practical laboratory expertise, scientific investigation, and professional skills relevant to the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors. In the final year, students undertake advanced modules including Cell Signalling in Health and Disease, Clinical Pharmacology, Computational Pharmacology, Toxicology, and an independent Research Project. They examine the molecular mechanisms of disease, cellular signalling pathways, drug action, clinical applications of medicines, computational approaches to drug development, and the effects of toxic substances on biological systems. The research project enables students to design and conduct original scientific investigations, analyse experimental data, solve complex biological problems, and communicate their findings using professional scientific standards. Throughout the programme, students combine theoretical learning with extensive laboratory training, research experience, and career-focused professional development, equipping them with the scientific knowledge, analytical ability, and practical skills required for careers in pharmaceutical research, biotechnology, drug discovery, toxicology, clinical research, healthcare, regulatory affairs, and other life science industries, while also providing an excellent foundation for postgraduate study and professional advancement.
