COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mental Health Nursing curriculum combines academic study, clinical practice, and professional development to prepare students for safe, compassionate, and evidence-based mental healthcare. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through core modules including Introduction to Nursing, Health Sciences for Nursing Practice (Mental Health), and Person-centred Nursing Care for Health and Wellbeing (Mental Health). The Introduction to Nursing module introduces the professional role of the nurse, legal and ethical responsibilities, Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards, communication skills, reflective practice, emotional intelligence, evidence-based care, infection prevention and control, health and safety, record keeping, and essential clinical skills, preparing students for practice placements and person-centred nursing care. In the second year, students strengthen their knowledge through Research for Health and Wellbeing, Pharmacological and Psychosocial Interventions (Mental Health), and Developing Nursing Practice (Mental Health). These modules focus on applying research evidence to clinical practice, exploring research methods, ethics, governance, epidemiology, public health, health inequalities, and the wider determinants of health. Students also examine therapeutic communication, psychosocial and pharmacological interventions, mental health promotion, immunisation, health screening, and the impact of lifestyle, childhood experiences, and social factors on physical, mental, and behavioural wellbeing. In the final year, students prepare for autonomous professional practice through Leadership for Nursing Practice (Mental Health), Innovation and Improvement in Nursing Practice (Mental Health), and Transition to Autonomous Practice (Mental Health). The Leadership for Nursing Practice module develops advanced skills in leadership, teamwork, delegation, patient safety, organisational culture, risk management, healthcare quality improvement, medication management, clinical governance, public health, and responding effectively to critical incidents. Students also learn to supervise others, evaluate nursing care, optimise the safe use of medicines, apply advanced pharmacological knowledge, and critically reflect on professional practice to support continuous improvement. Throughout the programme, classroom teaching is integrated with extensive clinical placements and practical skills training, enabling students to develop confidence, resilience, critical thinking, clinical judgement, and professional competence. This comprehensive curriculum prepares graduates for careers as registered mental health nurses in hospitals, community mental health services, rehabilitation units, crisis intervention teams, primary care, forensic services, and a wide range of health and social care settings, where they provide high-quality, recovery-focused care for people experiencing mental health conditions.
