COURSE CURRICULUM
The Human Biology BSc (Hons) at the University of Derby provides a comprehensive curriculum that develops students’ understanding of human biology, health, disease, and scientific research through progressive stages of study. In the first year, students complete core modules including Anatomy and Physiology, Chemistry of Life, Research and Practical Methods, Introduction to Biological and Developmental Psychology, and Clinical Genetics, with optional modules such as Concepts of Human Health and Wellbeing or Principles of Physical Activity, Nutrition and Health. These modules establish a strong foundation in human anatomy, organ systems, homeostasis, genetics, biochemistry, psychology, and laboratory techniques while introducing the scientific principles underlying human health. During the second year, students expand their knowledge through core modules including Diagnostic Molecular Biology, Human Physiology and Disease, and The Cell, alongside optional subjects such as Forensic Anthropology, Psychopathology, Physical Activity and Health, Microbiology, and Special Topics in Medical Biosciences. Students gain practical and theoretical experience in molecular diagnostic techniques, gene expression, population genetics, PCR, genomics, disease mechanisms, cellular biology, and workplace-relevant laboratory skills while exploring specialised areas of human health and medicine. In the final year, students complete an independent Research Project, where they design and conduct original scientific research by developing hypotheses, collecting and analysing data, interpreting results, and presenting their findings while following ethical and professional standards. They can further specialise through optional modules including Cell Signalling in Health and Disease, The Human Genome, Oncology and Immunology, Clinical Pharmacology, Emerging Diseases and Responses, Neuropsychology, Biotechnology, Biomedical Implications of Exercise, Activity and Health, Drugs of Abuse, Addictive Behaviours, Science Communication, and Vocational Module. Throughout the programme, students combine scientific theory with practical laboratory experience, research training, and professional development, preparing them for careers in healthcare, biomedical research, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, public health, clinical laboratories, education, and other life science sectors requiring strong analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills.
