COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Game Programming degree at the University of Derby is structured to develop strong foundations in computing while building advanced, industry-ready skills in game systems, engine development, and real-time interactive technology. In the early stage, core modules such as Programming, Logic and Discrete Mathematics, Games Technologies, Game Design Fundamentals, 3D Modelling, and Level Design introduce students to essential computing principles alongside creative game development concepts, ensuring they understand both how to code systems and how those systems support gameplay and player experience. The Programming module focuses on core concepts like variables, loops, functions, arrays, file handling, and problem-solving using a standard programming language, with an emphasis on designing, implementing, and testing solutions from scratch. As students progress, they enter more specialised and collaborative learning environments through modules such as Game Lab 1 and Game Lab 2, where they work in multidisciplinary teams with designers and artists to produce playable prototypes using agile workflows, version control systems, and industry-style pipelines. These modules also introduce professional practices including planning, scoping, sprint management, and ethical considerations such as responsible use of AI tools in development. Further progression into Design Pipelines for Programmers, Game Engine Systems, Software Engineering, and Graphics deepens technical expertise, focusing on engine architecture, rendering, optimisation, and the underlying systems that power modern games. In the final stage, Game Development and Individual Project modules allow students to build fully functional game prototypes from concept to release, while applying advanced programming, debugging, and optimisation techniques in real production scenarios. Optional modules such as XR Technologies further expand skillsets into emerging immersive platforms. Overall, the programme prepares graduates for careers as game programmers, engine developers, or technical specialists, with strong capabilities in coding, system design, optimisation, and collaborative studio production.
