COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Forensic Science programme is designed to prepare students for professional careers in forensic investigation by combining scientific theory with extensive practical training in realistic crime scene and laboratory environments. Accredited by the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences, the course meets high professional standards and provides graduates with the knowledge, technical skills and ethical understanding required for employment within forensic laboratories, law enforcement agencies and the wider criminal justice system. Students benefit from access to exceptional specialist facilities, including a dedicated Forensic Training Facility, advanced forensic science laboratories, a specialist imaging suite, forensic anthropology suite, insectary for forensic entomology, photography suite, ballistics laboratory, courtroom, crime scene vehicles and a clandestine burial site, allowing them to investigate realistic forensic scenarios using professional equipment and techniques. Teaching is delivered by experienced academics alongside practising forensic scientists, fingerprint specialists, police officers, lawyers and judges, giving students valuable insight into the scientific, investigative and legal aspects of forensic casework. The programme places a strong emphasis on hands-on learning through crime scene investigation, evidence collection, laboratory analysis, report writing and expert witness preparation, while an optional placement year through the partnership with the East Midlands Scientific Operations Unit (EMSOU) provides valuable workplace experience and enhances graduate employability. Students also have the opportunity to select chemistry-focused optional modules, enabling them to meet the requirements for Associate Membership of the Royal Society of Chemistry and broadening their career opportunities in analytical and laboratory sciences. Throughout the course, students develop expertise in scientific investigation, critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, teamwork and professional ethics, while recognising the importance of forensic science in delivering justice. The curriculum is aligned with international priorities, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly the goal of promoting Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
