COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Forensic Science and Criminology programme combines scientific investigation with criminology and criminal justice studies through a curriculum that progressively develops forensic, analytical and investigative expertise. In the first year, students establish a strong scientific foundation through core modules including Clinical Genetics, Chemistry of Life, Principles and Skills in Forensic Science, Methods of Laboratory Examination, Methods of Scene Investigation and Forensic Chemistry. The Clinical Genetics module introduces classical and molecular genetics, exploring gene organisation, inheritance, gene expression, genetic technologies and the ethical issues surrounding their application, providing essential knowledge for forensic DNA analysis. Alongside this, students learn laboratory techniques, crime scene investigation methods, forensic chemistry and evidence examination, developing practical skills in collecting, preserving and analysing forensic evidence using professional scientific procedures. In the second year, the programme broadens students' understanding of policing, forensic interpretation and criminal investigation through core modules including Policing and Society, Object Marks, Human and Non-Human Identification and Trace Interpretation and Research, with optional modules in Victimology, Forensic Anthropology and Forensic Biology. The Policing and Society module explores police ethics, policing by consent, criminal investigation practices, human rights, professional accountability and the relationship between policing and the wider criminal justice system through real-world case studies. Students also develop specialist knowledge in analysing tool marks, fingerprints, biological evidence, trace materials and identifying both human and non-human remains while strengthening their research and evidence interpretation skills. In the final year, students undertake advanced professional training through Independent Studies for Forensic Science, Miscarriages of Justice for Forensic Science, Specialist Scenes and Crime Scene to Court, with optional modules including Medical Forensics and Taphonomy and Drugs of Abuse. The Independent Studies module requires students to design and complete an original research project, formulate research questions, apply appropriate scientific methods and present their findings in a professional dissertation, demonstrating advanced scientific investigation, critical analysis and independent problem-solving. Students also examine complex crime scenes, investigate wrongful convictions, understand the role of forensic evidence within the legal system and develop the skills required to present scientific findings confidently in court. Throughout the programme, emphasis is placed on scientific accuracy, ethical practice, critical thinking, communication and professional standards, preparing graduates for careers in forensic science laboratories, crime scene investigation, policing, criminal justice agencies, forensic consultancy, research and related scientific and investigative professions.
