COURSE CURRICULUM

This Environmental Science and Sustainability programme is designed as a future-focused, applied degree that prepares students to tackle current and emerging environmental challenges through an interdisciplinary and problem-solving approach grounded in science, policy and real-world practice. It is explicitly aligned with global sustainability frameworks such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the United Nations Biodiversity Framework and the IUCN 30-Year Plan for Biodiversity, ensuring that students understand environmental issues within the context of international policy, governance and long-term ecological strategy. The course explores major global challenges including climate change driven by greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity loss and ecosystem decline, environmental degradation and its social and economic consequences, sustainable urban development, and the complexities of environmental governance and policy implementation. A key emphasis is placed on evaluating both the causes of environmental problems and practical, evidence-based solutions that support sustainable living while balancing economic, social and ecological needs. Teaching is delivered by research-active academics working in areas such as climate systems, marine ecosystems, biodiversity conservation and urban sustainability, and is supported through applied learning experiences including field trips, engagement with charities, businesses and government organisations, and live industry briefs. The curriculum is designed to be flexible and interdisciplinary, allowing students to specialise or combine areas of interest, and culminates in either a dissertation or an industrial project in which students may work directly with external organisations on real sustainability challenges. Additional features such as placement opportunities and student-led modules further strengthen employability and independent learning, enabling graduates to develop practical skills and analytical expertise relevant to careers in environmental consultancy, conservation, sustainability management and environmental policy. Overall, the programme aims to produce graduates who can critically assess environmental issues and contribute to practical, scalable solutions for a more sustainable future.
