COURSE CURRICULUM
This Earth Sciences programme is a technically focused, applied degree that builds a strong understanding of how the Earth system works and how it can be managed in response to major global challenges such as climate change, resource scarcity and the transition to low-carbon energy systems. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge through core modules such as Earth Materials, Critical Resources, Evolving Earth and Climate, Oceans and Atmosphere, alongside introductory training in field and analytical techniques through the Earth Scientist’s Toolkit. These modules establish a grounding in how atmospheric, oceanic and geological systems interact, including both natural climate variability and human-driven climate change, with attention to processes such as ocean circulation, carbon cycling and long-term climate evolution. In the second year, the course becomes more applied and technical, introducing key professional tools such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing, alongside core geological disciplines including sedimentology, structural analysis, and volcanic and metamorphic systems. Students also engage with real-world data and live briefs, applying digital and analytical techniques to environmental and geological problems. In the final year, the focus shifts toward advanced application and specialisation, particularly in areas such as subsurface modelling, imaging the Earth and sustainable energy systems. A major emphasis is placed on solving real environmental and energy challenges, including the design and modelling of low-carbon technologies such as geothermal energy and carbon capture and storage, using industry-standard software and numerical modelling techniques. Across the degree, there is a consistent integration of fieldwork, laboratory analysis and computational methods, ensuring students develop both practical and theoretical expertise. Graduates are prepared for careers in sectors such as environmental consultancy, energy and resource industries, geotechnical engineering, climate science and environmental monitoring, with strong emphasis on employability, technical competence and the ability to apply Earth science knowledge to real-world sustainability and climate-related challenges.
