COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography programme is designed to develop students into safe, competent, and autonomous healthcare professionals who can deliver high-quality patient-centred imaging services within the NHS and wider healthcare system. From the outset, students are introduced to professional practice through modules such as Introducing Professional Practice, which builds understanding of ethics, communication, teamwork, safeguarding, and HCPC standards, alongside the legal and regulatory frameworks governing radiography practice including IR(ME)R and IRR regulations. Early learning is supported by Fundamentals of Imaging Practice, where students develop core technical skills in radiographic positioning, exposure techniques, and image production, while also gaining insight into anatomy, physiology, and patient care. As the course progresses, Applied Imaging Practice expands students’ knowledge into more complex imaging procedures, including CT, MRI, ultrasound, DXA, and interventional radiology, alongside the development of radiation safety, image evaluation, and equipment management skills. The programme places strong emphasis on clinical placement and interprofessional working, enabling students to apply theoretical knowledge in real healthcare environments and work effectively as part of multidisciplinary teams. Transition to Practitioner modules across all levels guide students from novice learners to confident practitioners by progressively building clinical competence, decision-making ability, and professional accountability. These modules also focus on leadership, delegation, reflective practice, and quality improvement, ensuring graduates are prepared for real-world healthcare demands. In the final stage, students undertake advanced clinical development, preparation for graduate practice, and a scientific project, consolidating their ability to evaluate evidence, improve practice, and contribute to service development. Throughout the programme, there is a consistent focus on patient-centred care, safety, professionalism, and wellbeing, ensuring students not only gain technical expertise in imaging but also develop the interpersonal and ethical skills required to deliver compassionate, effective healthcare. Overall, the course prepares graduates to enter a high-demand profession with strong clinical competence, scientific understanding, and readiness for autonomous practice.
