COURSE CURRICULUM

This BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering degree provides a structured pathway into the civil engineering profession by combining strong theoretical foundations with practical, industry-focused learning. In the first year, you study core modules such as Construction Materials Technology, Construction Organisation and Economics, Site Surveying, Applied Mathematics 1, Structures 1, and Civil Engineering Construction with CAD, which introduce essential principles of materials behaviour, structural design, surveying techniques, construction processes and engineering mathematics. Construction Materials Technology focuses on selecting appropriate materials for construction based on performance, cost, sustainability, manufacturing methods, and health and safety considerations, supported by practical tools and applied learning. In the second year, you develop more advanced analytical and technical skills through modules including Applied Mathematics 2, Fluids and Drainage Engineering, Geology and Soil Mechanics, Infrastructure Surveying and Asset Management, Structural Design 2, and Infrastructure Design and Materials, enabling you to model and solve complex engineering problems involving structures, hydraulics and geotechnics. The final year further extends your expertise with Civil Engineering and Construction Management, Structural Design Project, Independent Study and Personal Development, Geotechnical Engineering 2, and optional specialist modules such as hydraulic engineering and advanced surveying, allowing you to focus on areas aligned with your career goals. The construction management module develops understanding of project delivery, health and safety, sustainability, environmental impact, legislation, financial control, quality management and ethical practice, while also covering leadership, teamwork and organisational management in engineering projects. Throughout the course, you will apply theory to real-world challenges through case studies, projects, site visits and CAD-based design work, gaining experience with industry-standard tools and methods. The programme is designed to prepare graduates for careers in civil, structural, geotechnical and infrastructure engineering, as well as construction management, consultancy and public sector roles, while developing strong analytical, problem-solving, communication and project management skills essential for professional engineering practice.
