COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biomedical Science BSc (Hons) at the University of Derby follows a structured curriculum that develops students’ knowledge, practical laboratory expertise, and research skills across three stages of study. In the first year, students complete core modules including Introduction to Biomedical Science, Chemistry of Life, Anatomy and Physiology, Concepts of Human Health and Wellbeing, Clinical Genetics, and Research and Practical Methods. These modules introduce the principles of biomedical science, human anatomy, genetics, laboratory practice, and professional standards while providing an understanding of the role of biomedical scientists within the NHS and other healthcare settings. Students also learn about the responsibilities of professional and regulatory bodies such as the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). In the second year, students deepen their scientific knowledge through core modules in Microbiology, Clinical Immunology, Diagnostic Molecular Biology, The Cell, Haematology and Transfusion Science, and Cellular Pathology. They study microorganisms, host-pathogen interactions, disease mechanisms, immune responses, molecular diagnostic techniques, blood sciences, and tissue pathology while gaining practical experience in aseptic laboratory techniques and diagnostic investigations. In the final year, students undertake advanced modules including Cell Signalling in Health and Disease, Medical Microbiology, Clinical Biochemistry, Research and Professional Practice in Biomedical Science, and a substantial independent Research Project. The research project enables students to design and conduct original scientific investigations by developing hypotheses, collecting and analysing data, solving complex problems, and presenting findings while applying ethical, safety, and professional standards. Throughout the programme, students combine theoretical learning with extensive laboratory training, scientific research, and professional development, preparing them for careers in hospital and public health laboratories, medical research, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, clinical diagnostics, and other biomedical science sectors, while developing the practical expertise and analytical skills required for professional practice and lifelong learning.
