COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biology BSc (Hons) at the University of Derby is structured to develop students from foundational biological knowledge to advanced independent research skills across three stages of study. In the first year, core modules such as Bioscience in Practice, Global Citizenship for Bioscientists, Ecology, The Science of Life, Biodiversity and Ecophysiology, and Genetics and Evolution provide a broad introduction to biological sciences. Students learn essential laboratory techniques, microbiology, microscopy, aseptic practice, scientific writing, data handling, and basic statistical analysis while gaining an understanding of biodiversity, evolution, and ecological systems. The second year focuses on applying scientific methods and analysing complex biological data through modules including Biological Problem Solving, Understanding Life through Data, Molecular Biology, and Microbial Ecology, alongside optional subjects such as Field Biology, Adaptation to Environment, Ecosystem Services, and Human Physiology and Disease. This stage strengthens research design, digital literacy, ethics, risk assessment, problem-solving, database use, and professional networking skills while preparing students for their final research project. In the final year, students complete the Independent Studies module, a substantial original research project that involves hypothesis formulation, ethical approval, planning, data collection, analysis, interpretation, and scientific reporting. They can also choose specialist options such as Wildlife Conservation, Biotechnology, Genomics, Oncology and Immunology, Tropical Marine Biology, Habitat Management, and Science Communication. Across all years, the course combines laboratory work, field studies, research training, and employability development, ensuring graduates gain practical scientific expertise, analytical ability, professional skills, and experience in independent investigation that prepare them for careers in biotechnology, environmental science, conservation, healthcare, research, and related bioscience industries.
