COURSE CURRICULUM
The BSc (Hons) Artificial Intelligence and Criminology curriculum combines artificial intelligence, data science, and criminology to provide students with the technical knowledge and analytical skills required to address modern criminal justice challenges. In the first year, students study core modules including Logic and Discrete Mathematics, Programming, Ethics and Artificial Intelligence, Digital Skills for Artificial Intelligence, The Criminal Justice System, and Crime, Justice and Society. These modules establish a strong foundation in mathematical concepts, programming, AI ethics, digital technologies, and the operation of the criminal justice system while introducing students to crime, justice, and societal issues. Students develop skills in algebra, logic, discrete mathematics, graphs, networks, matrices, and problem-solving, which support later study in artificial intelligence and data analysis. In the second year, students advance their technical expertise through core modules in Data Science and Modelling Fundamentals, Introduction to Machine Learning, Research Methods in Artificial Intelligence, and Team Project on Contemporary Issues in AI, with optional modules including Policing and Society, Themes in Forensic Psychology, Victimology, and Penology: Punishment and Rehabilitation. Students learn data modelling, forecasting, time-series analysis, exploratory data analysis, visualisation, machine learning techniques, and AI research methods while applying these skills to contemporary issues through collaborative projects. In the final year, students develop advanced knowledge through core modules including Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, Deep Learning, and an Individual Project in Applied AI, alongside optional modules such as Criminal Intelligence Analysis, Cybercrime, Murder: Dynamics, Pathologies and Investigation, and Populism, Extremism and Violence. These modules expose students to the latest developments in AI and data science, industry-standard software, advanced analytical techniques, and independent research while exploring crime investigation, intelligence analysis, cybersecurity, and emerging security challenges. The Individual Project in Applied AI enables students to apply their technical and research skills to a real-world problem, demonstrating their ability to develop innovative AI solutions. Overall, the curriculum integrates computing, artificial intelligence, criminology, and data analysis to prepare graduates for careers in artificial intelligence, data science, law enforcement, cybersecurity, criminal intelligence, digital forensics, public policy, and research.
