The BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering degree at the University of Derby is structured to develop strong technical, analytical and practical engineering skills, preparing students for careers in modern mechanical and multidisciplinary engineering industries. In the first year, students study core modules including Engineering Science, Engineering Mathematics 1, Engineering Design 1, Mechanical Engineering Principles, Engineering Applications and Professional Development, and Engineering Workshop, which together build a foundation in mechanics, design thinking, materials, mathematics and professional engineering practice. The Engineering Workshop module is highly practical and introduces students to manufacturing and prototyping processes such as CNC machining, additive manufacturing, composite fabrication, measurement technologies, non-destructive testing, soldering, wiring, PCB design, fault-finding and the use of diagnostic test equipment, alongside essential health and safety training. In the second year, students progress to more advanced topics including Engineering Design 2, Engineering Mathematics 2, Fluids and Thermodynamics, Manufacturing Automation and Control, and Team Project and Professional Development, with optional modules such as Dynamics and Vibration or Structural Mechanics and Materials allowing specialisation. This stage focuses on improving and optimising engineering systems using CAD, simulation, DFMA principles, quality engineering, risk analysis, FMEA and cost evaluation, while also strengthening understanding of thermal systems, automation and manufacturing processes. In the final year, students undertake advanced study through modules such as Computational Mechanics and Failure Analysis, Mechanics of Materials, Engineering Practice, Sustainability and Ethics, and a major Individual Project and Professional Development module, supported by optional specialist topics like Computational Fluid Dynamics and Engineering Composite Materials. The individual project allows students to conduct in-depth independent research or applied engineering work, demonstrating their ability to solve complex problems. Across the programme, emphasis is placed on sustainability, innovation, ethical engineering practice and employability, ensuring graduates are prepared for roles in mechanical design, manufacturing, energy systems, automotive engineering, aerospace, and broader industrial engineering sectors.
