The BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering programme at the University of Derby is built around a structured progression from foundational engineering principles to advanced applied systems design, preparing students for careers in modern electrical, electronic and power-based industries. In the first year, students develop core technical competence through modules such as Engineering Science, Engineering Mathematics 1, Electrical Circuits and Devices, Engineering Design 1 and Engineering Workshop, alongside Engineering Applications and Professional Development, which together introduce key principles of mechanics, electronics, mathematics, and professional engineering practice. The workshop module is particularly practical, giving hands-on experience with manufacturing processes such as CNC machining, additive manufacturing, soldering, PCB design, fault-finding and the use of diagnostic equipment, ensuring students can translate theory into real-world technical skills while working safely and effectively in laboratory environments. In the second year, learning becomes more specialised with modules including Engineering Design 2, Engineering Mathematics 2, Control Systems and Electrical Machines, Electronic Systems and Electronic Communication, which deepen understanding of system design, automation, electronics and optimisation, while also emphasising sustainability, quality engineering, risk analysis and design-for-manufacture approaches. The final year focuses on advanced application and independent study, with major modules such as Power Electronics Applications, Sensors and Embedded Systems, Sustainable Electric Power Systems Engineering, and a substantial Individual Project and Professional Development module, which allows students to research and develop a complex engineering solution in depth, often aligned with industry needs. Across all levels, there is a strong emphasis on sustainability, ethics, innovation, and professional development, alongside opportunities to build transferable skills in teamwork, problem-solving, communication and project management. The programme integrates theory with extensive practical work and encourages students to engage with real engineering challenges. Graduates are prepared for roles in electrical design, systems engineering, power generation, embedded systems development, electronics manufacturing and related high-technology sectors, or for further study and professional accreditation in engineering disciplines.
