This Civil Engineering BEng (Hons) degree develops advanced technical, analytical and professional skills required for designing and managing modern infrastructure, combining strong mathematical foundations with applied engineering practice. In the first year, you study core modules such as Construction Materials Technology, Construction Organisation and Economics, Site Surveying, Engineering Mathematics 1, Structural Analysis Theory and Design 1, and Civil Engineering Construction with CAD, which introduce essential principles of materials selection, structural behaviour, surveying techniques, engineering mathematics and construction processes. Construction Materials Technology focuses on selecting appropriate materials based on performance, cost, sustainability, manufacturing methods, and health and safety considerations, supported by practical applications and materials selection tools. In the second year, you progress to more advanced technical study through modules including Engineering Mathematics 2, Fluids and Drainage Engineering, Infrastructure Design and Materials, Infrastructure Surveying and Asset Management, Structural Analysis Theory and Design 2, and Geotechnical Engineering 1, building your ability to analyse complex engineering systems such as hydraulics, soils, structures and transport infrastructure using mathematical modelling and data analysis. The final year further extends your expertise with Advanced Structural Analysis and Design, Civil Engineering and Construction Management, Geotechnical Engineering 2, independent technical research, and optional specialist modules such as hydraulic engineering and advanced surveying. Advanced Structural Analysis and Design develops your ability to analyse indeterminate structures, continuous beams, frames, arches and slabs, while applying design principles across steel, concrete, timber and masonry structures and using computer-based methods such as finite element analysis. Throughout the course, you gain practical experience using industry-standard tools and techniques, supported by strong links to professional bodies and accreditation that align with Incorporated Engineer and Chartered Engineer pathways. The programme prepares you for careers in civil, structural, geotechnical, transportation and infrastructure engineering, as well as construction management and design consultancy, while developing transferable skills in problem-solving, teamwork, project management and technical communication.
