COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Sociology programme provides a comprehensive understanding of how societies develop, function and change, enabling students to critically examine the social, political, economic and cultural forces that shape contemporary life. In the first year, students build a strong foundation by studying sociological theory, crime and justice, social inequalities, research methods, media, culture and modern British society. They explore topics such as crime, punishment, race, ethnicity, gender, class, social exclusion and the relationship between government, society and justice. In the second year, the course develops advanced analytical and research skills through qualitative and quantitative research methods while examining classical social theory, capitalism, globalisation, gender and sexuality, and social change. Students also gain practical experience through the Sociology in the World module, which connects academic learning with real-world organisations and employment opportunities. In the final year, students complete an independent research project on a topic of personal interest while preparing for graduate careers through employability-focused learning. A wide range of optional modules allows students to specialise in areas such as youth justice, digital society, politics and protest, health and social justice, terrorism, populism, gender inequality, conflict, and youth offending. The course encourages critical thinking, ethical decision-making, independent research, and effective communication while helping students understand complex global and local social issues. Learning is enhanced through field trips, work placements, and opportunities to engage with organisations, allowing students to apply sociological knowledge in professional settings. Graduates develop strong analytical, research, problem-solving and interpersonal skills that prepare them for careers in public services, social research, criminal justice, education, local government, charities, policy development, community organisations, journalism, human resources, and further postgraduate study, making them well equipped to contribute positively to society and address contemporary social challenges.
