COURSE CURRICULUM
The Sociology programme combined with Human Resource Management focuses on understanding how societies function and how people can be managed, motivated, and developed within organisations to improve performance and wellbeing. A key theme of the course is exploring how sociological thinking can be used to analyse modern life, including how culture, inequality, globalisation, and organisational systems shape human behaviour and social change. In the first stage, modules such as Thinking Sociologically introduce students to core sociological theories and encourage critical thinking about how society is structured and how “common sense” ideas can be challenged through academic analysis. Alongside this, modules like Media, Culture and Society and Understanding People in Organisations link social theory to real-world contexts such as workplaces and institutions. As students progress, they develop stronger research skills through modules like Researching Society: Qualitative Approaches, which trains them in designing and conducting ethical research into lived social experiences. At the same time, Human Resource-focused modules such as People Resourcing and Talent Planning and Employee Development show how organisations can improve performance by effectively managing recruitment, training, and staff development. Optional modules allow exploration of globalisation, sustainability, gender, politics, and digital society, helping students understand how the modern world is changing and where it is heading. In later stages, students can undertake independent research or a dissertation, applying sociological and HR knowledge to a topic of personal interest. The course also provides applied opportunities such as studying sociology in the workplace or engaging with real organisational challenges, helping students link theory to practice. Overall, the programme develops critical thinkers who understand both how societies operate and how people function within organisations, equipping graduates with the skills to influence positive change in workplaces, communities, and broader social systems.
