COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Economics and Sociology curriculum combines economic analysis with sociological theory to develop students’ understanding of contemporary social, economic, and organisational issues. In the first year, students study core modules including Thinking Sociologically, Media, Culture and Society, Introductory Microeconomics, and Introduction to Macroeconomic Concepts and Data, with optional modules such as Making Modern Britain and Economic Policy Analysis. These modules introduce sociological theories, the relationship between society, culture, and media, and the foundations of microeconomics and macroeconomics, enabling students to critically examine how social structures, institutions, and economic systems influence individuals and communities. In the second year, students strengthen their analytical and research skills through core modules including Researching Society 2: Qualitative Approaches, Capitalism, Culture and Class: Social Theory in Classical Modernity, Data Analysis, and Applied Intermediate Macroeconomics. Optional modules include Globalisation and Social Change, Statistics in Social Research, Sociology in the World, Sociology of Gender and Sexuality, Public and Third Sector Economics, Applied Intermediate Microeconomics, and Current Debates in Applied Economic Theory. Students gain practical experience in qualitative research design, ethics, data collection, and interpretation while developing expertise in social theory, economic analysis, and statistical methods using real-world datasets. In the final year, students complete the Applied Economics Project, an independent research module that applies economic theory, data analysis, and research methods to solve real business and organisational challenges. Working with local organisations where appropriate, students produce professional research reports and present their findings while developing networking and communication skills. They can also specialise through optional modules including Independent Study, The Sociology of Politics and Protest, World in Conflict: War, Terrorism and Societies, Gender and Inequality in the Global Age, Digital Futures and the Global Networked Society, Health, Illness and Social Justice, Populism, Extremism and Violence, International Business Economics, Financial Risk Management, Economics of Sustainable Business Growth, Investing and Financial Market Behaviour, and International Banking. Overall, the curriculum equips graduates with strong research, quantitative, qualitative, analytical, and communication skills for careers in business, finance, public policy, consultancy, government, research, community development, and postgraduate study.
