COURSE CURRICULUM

Throughout the BA (Hons) Photography degree, you will progressively develop the creative, technical, research and professional skills required for a successful career in photography. In your first year, you will build a strong foundation through core modules including Photographic Practice, Photographic Studio Production – People, Photographic Studio Production – Objects, Histories of Photography and Theories of Photography. You will learn to operate DSLR and SLR cameras, master exposure, composition, lighting and camera settings, while gaining practical experience in analogue processing, digital workflows, image editing, colour management, file organisation and professional printing. Alongside technical skills, you will explore the historical and contemporary development of photography, enabling you to contextualise your own work within wider artistic and cultural perspectives. In your second year, you will expand your creative practice through modules such as Expanded Media, Image Musing Text, Raising Your Voice and Making Your Future. You will experiment with a wide range of artistic media and photographic techniques, combining traditional and digital processes to develop innovative and distinctive approaches to image making. These modules also strengthen your critical thinking, visual communication, research, reflective practice and career planning while encouraging you to establish your own creative voice. In your final year, you will refine your specialist interests through the core modules Writing the Image and Realisation. You will undertake an in-depth research dissertation linked directly to your photographic practice, critically exploring theories, concepts and contemporary issues relevant to your chosen area of specialisation. At the same time, you will complete a major practical project that demonstrates your technical expertise, creative vision and professional abilities. Throughout the course, you will produce a high-quality portfolio, respond to creative briefs, document your development through reflective practice and receive tutorial support to shape your academic and career goals. By graduation, you will have developed advanced technical proficiency, creative confidence, research expertise, project management skills and professional knowledge, preparing you for careers in commercial, editorial, documentary, fashion, advertising, fine art and freelance photography, as well as postgraduate study and wider opportunities within the creative industries.
