COURSE CURRICULUM

The Music Production curriculum combines creative practice, technical expertise, and industry knowledge to prepare students for professional careers in music production, sound engineering, composition, and audio design. In the first year, students develop a strong foundation through core modules including Commercial Composition, Music Industry and Society, Music Theory for Production, and Studio Production Techniques. These modules introduce music theory, commercial composition, recording techniques, studio technologies, and the structure of the music industry while encouraging students to experiment with a wide range of musical styles and creative approaches. The Commercial Composition module develops students’ ability to analyse musical forms, understand stylistic influences, and create original compositions by exploring unfamiliar musical concepts, genres, and practices while strengthening their understanding of musical language, creativity, and artistic expression. In the second year, students expand their technical and creative abilities through core modules including Composing for Commission, Music Business Studies, Spatial Sound and Music Perception, and Creative Technologies. The Composing for Commission module focuses on producing music for real and simulated professional scenarios, enabling students to compose, arrange, and produce music across different genres while developing collaboration, leadership, negotiation, organisation, and decision-making skills. Students also explore music business practices, advanced production technologies, and immersive audio techniques to prepare for the evolving creative industries. In the final year, students consolidate their knowledge through core modules including Production Portfolio, Creative Project, and Research Project. The Production Portfolio module enables students to undertake a commercially focused, student-managed project that reflects their individual creative interests and career aspirations, allowing them to demonstrate advanced production techniques, technical expertise, artistic interpretation, and professional project management. Throughout the programme, students build a portfolio of original work while developing skills in recording, mixing, mastering, composition, sound design, music technology, research, and creative collaboration. This practical and industry-focused curriculum prepares graduates for careers in music production, sound engineering, composition, audio post-production, live sound, film and television, gaming, advertising, multimedia production, and the wider creative industries.
