COURSE CURRICULUM
The BA (Hons) Interior Design programme at the University of Derby combines creative design, technical knowledge and professional practice to prepare students for careers in the interior design industry. In the first year, students develop a strong foundation by exploring the history and global development of interior design, spatial typologies, visual culture and design theory while building practical skills in visual communication, concept development, structural materials and spatial design. They learn to analyse cultural and historical influences on interiors, create imaginative design proposals and present ideas through written, visual and oral formats. In the second year, the course focuses on context-specific design, encouraging students to investigate spatial identity, place, culture and user experience while applying critical theory to interior environments. Students strengthen their technical expertise through Building Information Modelling (BIM), technical drawing systems and building services, while developing research, presentation and communication skills to deliver professional design projects. They also explore how design interacts with social, political and economic factors, producing context-sensitive interventions for a range of interior settings. In the final year, students undertake advanced independent research to establish a personal design philosophy and develop a professional portfolio aligned with their career aspirations. They critically evaluate design precedents, investigate contemporary issues and create innovative proposals for reimagining existing spaces using sustainable strategies and creative problem-solving. The programme also develops professional networking skills, helping students engage confidently with industry, clients and collaborators. Throughout the course, there is a strong emphasis on sustainability, innovation, adaptive reuse, technical competence and evidence-based design, enabling students to balance creativity with practical and regulatory requirements. Graduates leave with advanced skills in interior design research, visualisation, spatial planning, technical documentation, sustainable design, digital technologies and professional communication, supported by a comprehensive portfolio that demonstrates their creative identity and technical expertise. These qualities prepare them for careers across residential, commercial, retail, hospitality, exhibition, workplace and public space design, as well as opportunities in furniture design, design consultancy and related creative industries.
