COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Illustration at the University of Derby is a studio-based, practice-led course designed to help students become innovative, confident and professionally minded illustrators with a distinctive creative voice. Throughout the degree, students explore traditional and contemporary illustration through drawing, printmaking, digital media, photography, painting, collage, 3D model making and moving image while developing strong visual storytelling, communication and problem-solving skills. In the first year, students build core creative foundations by studying visual communication, illustration practice, creative debates and interventions, learning to research ideas, experiment with materials, develop concepts and communicate effectively for different audiences. The course encourages creative risk-taking and supports students in discovering their own artistic identity through practical projects, workshops and reflective practice. In the second year, students deepen their personal style by exploring world building, narrative illustration and professional practice while working on live projects and expanding their skills across publishing, editorial, children's books, graphic novels, packaging, educational design and other illustration fields. Optional specialist labs in digital media, materials, culture, enterprise and social practice allow students to tailor their learning to individual interests. The final year focuses on professional readiness through design sprints, live studio projects, independent creative practice and portfolio development, enabling students to solve real-world design problems, collaborate with industry partners and produce work to professional standards. Throughout the course, students receive guidance from experienced illustrators, exhibiting artists, printmakers and commercial practitioners, alongside access to dedicated illustration studios, printmaking workshops, drawing facilities and digital design resources. Membership of The Association of Illustrators, live industry briefs, competitions, guest lectures, exhibitions and gallery visits provide valuable networking opportunities and professional insight. By graduation, students possess a diverse portfolio, advanced creative and technical skills, strong research and critical thinking abilities, and the confidence to pursue careers as freelance illustrators or work across publishing, editorial, advertising, animation, concept art, children's media, branding, education and other creative industries.
