COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) History curriculum develops students' historical knowledge, research expertise and analytical skills through a broad range of modules spanning different historical periods, regions and themes. In the first year, students study core modules including Historical Methods and Sources (PDP), Public Uses of the Past, Empires, Migrants and Mobility, Nations and Nationalism (1789–1914), Renaissance and Reformation (1485–1648) and The Atlantic World (1680–1833). The Historical Methods and Sources module provides the academic foundation for the degree by introducing students to historical research methods, historiography and the discipline of history at university level. Students examine how historians interpret the past, evaluate debates surrounding objectivity, historical narratives, Marxist and postmodern approaches, biography, contemporary history and the relationship between history and other academic disciplines. They also learn to assess the strengths and limitations of different historical sources while developing practical research, writing and critical analysis skills applicable to both academic study and future careers. The remaining first-year modules provide a broad understanding of major historical developments, including European political change, global migration, empire-building, religious transformation and the Atlantic world's social, political and economic history. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge through modules such as Public Conference: Marketing and Presenting the Past, The Cold War: Global Conflict, Culture and Diplomacy (1945–1991), Research in Practice, The Early Modern Body, Living with Dictatorship: Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union in Comparative Perspective and Continuity and Change in Contemporary Britain. A distinctive feature is the Public Conference module, where students undertake collaborative historical research, organise and promote a professional public conference, deliver academic presentations and work with archives and heritage organisations while developing valuable communication, teamwork and event management skills. In the final year, students choose from specialist modules including British Country Houses and Their Families, Historians and Material Culture, Britain and Total War, India, Empire, Diaspora, Rise of the Dragon? China and the World Since 1793, Exploring the Slum, Advanced Research in Practice and an independent research project. These modules encourage students to undertake advanced historical investigation, engage with complex historical debates and produce substantial independent research. Throughout the programme, students develop advanced research, critical thinking, communication, digital media, public engagement and project management skills, preparing them for careers in education, museums, archives, heritage, publishing, journalism, public history, government, the civil service, research and many other professions requiring strong analytical and communication abilities.
