COURSE CURRICULUM
The BA (Hons) History and Sociology degree combines the study of historical events with the analysis of contemporary societies, enabling students to understand how the past continues to influence present-day social, political, economic and cultural issues. The programme develops critical thinking, research, analytical and communication skills through an interdisciplinary curriculum that explores history alongside key sociological themes such as inequality, power, identity, media, globalisation and social justice. In the first year, students build strong foundations by studying historical methods, empires, migration, nationalism, sociological theory, modern Britain, and the relationship between media, culture and society. The second year expands knowledge through optional modules covering social theory, qualitative and quantitative research methods, globalisation, gender and sexuality, as well as historical topics including the Cold War, dictatorships, public history and early modern society. Students gain valuable practical research experience while developing the ability to apply sociological concepts to real-world issues and historical evidence. In the final year, students choose from a wide range of specialist modules exploring politics, protest, digital societies, health, inequality, conflict, extremism, global history, British social history and international perspectives, before completing an independent research project on a topic of personal interest. Throughout the programme, students are encouraged to engage with work placements, community projects, guest lectures, study visits and optional study abroad opportunities, enhancing both academic knowledge and professional experience. Graduates develop advanced skills in research, problem solving, data interpretation, teamwork, presentation and critical analysis, preparing them for careers across education, heritage, museums, archives, journalism, public policy, local and national government, charities, community development, criminal justice, social research, civil service, marketing, public relations and postgraduate study. By combining historical understanding with sociological insight, the course equips students to analyse complex social challenges, understand historical change and contribute effectively to addressing contemporary issues in both national and global contexts.
