COURSE CURRICULUM
This History and Education Studies degree combines the study of global and modern history with a multidisciplinary exploration of education through sociology, psychology and philosophy, enabling you to understand how societies, institutions and knowledge systems develop over time. In history, you will build a strong foundation in historical methods and sources, learning how historians interpret evidence, construct arguments and engage with debates about objectivity, narrative, historiography and the role of history in public life. You will study major themes such as empires, migration, nationalism, diplomacy and conflict, including detailed exploration of periods such as 1789–1914 and the Cold War, as well as global perspectives like India, empire and diaspora, helping you understand how historical events shape identity, politics and culture across different regions. Alongside this, Education Studies provides a critical understanding of how education systems function within society, focusing on issues such as inequality, curriculum development and the social role of education, while drawing on key perspectives including sociology, psychology and teaching theory. You will explore how education has evolved over time, how people learn and think, and how educational policy reflects broader social, cultural and political forces. The programme encourages you to connect historical understanding with contemporary educational issues, examining how ideas about knowledge, power and identity influence both past and present systems of learning. Optional modules allow you to specialise in areas such as modern British history, empire and migration, education policy, social exclusion and the science of learning. You will also develop research skills through methods training and independent projects, culminating in a final-year dissertation or independent study. Overall, the course develops strong analytical, research and communication skills, preparing you for careers in education, heritage, museums, public history, policy, research and other fields that require critical understanding of society, history and education.
