COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Economics and History curriculum combines the study of economics with historical research, enabling students to develop analytical, research, and critical thinking skills through a balanced interdisciplinary programme. In the first year, students study core modules including Historical Methods and Sources, Renaissance and Reformation, 1485–1648, Empires, Migrants and Mobility, Introductory Microeconomics, Introduction to Macroeconomic Concepts and Data, and Economic Policy Analysis. These modules introduce historical research methods, historiography, source analysis, and key historical periods while building a strong foundation in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and economic policy. Students learn to evaluate historical evidence, understand competing theoretical approaches, and apply economic concepts to contemporary business and policy issues. In the second year, students strengthen their analytical capabilities through Applied Intermediate Macroeconomics and Data Analysis, alongside optional modules such as The Cold War, Continuity and Change in Contemporary Britain, Public Conference: Marketing and Presenting the Past, Living with Dictatorship, The Early Modern Body, Research in Practice, Public and Third Sector Economics, Applied Intermediate Microeconomics, and Current Debates in Applied Economic Theory. These modules develop practical skills in economic analysis, data interpretation, historical research, and public engagement while encouraging students to apply economic theory to real-world events and policy challenges. In the final year, students can tailor their studies through a wide range of specialist options, including India, Empire, Diaspora: Identity, Violence and Memory Across the Twentieth Century, Exploring the Slum, Historians and Material Culture, Rise of the Dragon? China and the World Since 1793, Britain and Total War, British Country Houses and Their Families, Advanced Research in Practice, History Independent Study, International Business Economics, Economics of Sustainable Business Growth, Financial Risk Management, Investing and Financial Market Behaviour, International Banking, and the Applied Economics Project. These modules provide opportunities to undertake independent research, explore global historical developments, and apply advanced economic analysis to business and policy issues. Overall, the curriculum equips graduates with strong research, communication, quantitative, and critical analysis skills, preparing them for careers in economics, business, finance, public policy, heritage, education, consultancy, research, and postgraduate study.
