COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Graphic Design programme at the University of Derby develops students into creative, adaptable and professional visual communicators through a combination of studio practice, design thinking, experimentation and industry-focused learning. In the first year, students study modules including Investigating Visual Communication, Graphic Design Essentials, Graphic Design Studio, Creative Debates and Creative Interventions, building a strong foundation in graphic design principles and creative problem-solving. Students explore a wide variety of media and techniques, including digital image creation, moving image, drawing, printmaking, typography and letterforms, while experimenting with symbols, pictograms, visual metaphors, sequential storytelling, humour, character design and visual narratives. Throughout the design process, they develop research, experimentation, reflection and critical analysis skills, learning how to generate effective visual solutions for different audiences and communication purposes. The programme encourages creative risk-taking, independent thinking and the development of an individual visual language, supported by workshops, studio activities, tutorials and continuous feedback. Students document their creative process, research, outcomes and reflections in a professional portfolio that supports personal development and future career planning. Learning also includes studying the work of influential artists and designers to understand contemporary visual communication and its role in addressing cultural, political, environmental and social issues. Alongside technical skills, students strengthen communication, teamwork, presentation and project management abilities through practical briefs and collaborative activities. The course combines analogue and digital design methods, ensuring graduates are confident using modern creative tools while maintaining strong conceptual and artistic foundations. As they progress, students continue refining their professional identity and build an industry-standard portfolio that showcases originality, technical expertise and creative thinking. Graduates are well prepared for careers in graphic design, branding, advertising, publishing, digital media, motion graphics, user experience, creative direction and freelance practice.
