COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Fine Art programme at the University of Derby develops students into confident contemporary artists through studio-based learning, creative experimentation and critical inquiry. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in fine art by studying Introduction to Studio Practice, Experimentation and Curiosity, Extended Contexts and Contextualising Practice. They are introduced to the culture and philosophy of the fine art studio, explore a wide range of media and materials through practical workshops, and learn how to initiate and develop creative ideas using research, observation and experimentation. Students also begin to analyse the work of established artists to inform and strengthen their own artistic practice. In the second year, the focus shifts towards developing an individual creative voice through modules including Locating Practice, Staging: Engaging Audience, External Professional Contexts and Practising Theory. Students refine their visual language, deepen their conceptual thinking and gain experience in presenting artwork to different audiences while understanding the professional contexts of contemporary art practice. They also strengthen their research, communication and critical analysis skills by connecting theoretical ideas with creative production. In the final year, students undertake Resolution and Synthesis, Professional Practice and Critical Enquiry, where they independently develop and complete a sustained body of studio work that demonstrates originality, conceptual depth and technical confidence. They critically evaluate their own work alongside the practices of other artists while refining their use of media, materials and creative processes to produce a coherent and professional portfolio. Throughout the programme, students benefit from dedicated studio spaces, specialist workshops, continuous tutor support and opportunities to participate in exhibitions and public presentations. The course encourages experimentation, independent thinking, reflective practice and creative risk-taking while developing transferable skills in research, project management, communication, presentation and professional practice. Graduates leave with the artistic confidence, technical expertise and critical understanding required for careers as practising artists, curators, arts educators, gallery professionals, community arts practitioners, creative consultants or for progression to postgraduate study, making the programme an excellent preparation for success within the contemporary art and wider creative industries.
