COURSE CURRICULUM
The first year of the BA (Hons) Film programme provides a comprehensive introduction to the creative, technical and analytical foundations of professional filmmaking through four core modules: Image, Industry and Analysis, Production Toolkit, From Script to Screen and Film Post-Production Foundations. Together, these modules develop the essential knowledge and practical skills required to understand and produce contemporary film and television content. The Image, Industry and Analysis module introduces students to the critical study of film by exploring the language of the moving image, methods of film analysis and the relationship between media, culture and society. Students examine issues such as representation, identity, politics and the influence of cultural institutions while analysing how films communicate meaning and how emerging technologies, including digital media, the internet and video games, continue to shape modern filmmaking. At the same time, students are encouraged to reflect on their own creative practice and develop an understanding of the filmmaker's role within the wider media landscape. The Production Toolkit module introduces the practical foundations of film production, including camera operation, lighting, sound recording, production planning, health and safety, crew responsibilities and professional workflows used on film sets. From Script to Screen develops storytelling abilities by guiding students through the complete production process, from generating ideas and writing scripts to planning, directing and producing finished short films. Film Post-Production Foundations introduces professional editing techniques, colour correction, sound editing, visual storytelling and post-production workflows using industry-standard software and equipment. Throughout the year, students participate in collaborative productions that mirror real film industry practice, developing teamwork, communication, creative problem-solving and project management skills while building an initial professional portfolio. Practical workshops, studio-based learning and critical reflection ensure that students gain both technical competence and creative confidence. By the end of the first year, students have established a solid foundation in film theory, visual storytelling, production techniques and post-production processes, preparing them for more advanced specialist work in directing, cinematography, editing, screenwriting and high-end television production during the later stages of the degree.
