COURSE CURRICULUM

The Business and Music programme combines professional music education with entrepreneurship and business management to prepare students for careers in the music, entertainment, and creative industries. In the first year, students develop core skills in music performance, recording, the music industry, marketing, entrepreneurship, and finance. Through the Performance Redefined module, they explore diverse musical traditions, experiment with new approaches to performance, refine their musicianship, and develop creativity, communication, and artistic expression while building confidence in performance and collaboration. The Art and Science of Recording and Music Industry and Society modules provide practical knowledge of recording techniques, music production, and the commercial and cultural aspects of the music industry, while business modules strengthen understanding of marketing, finance, and entrepreneurial thinking. In the second year, students expand their practical and professional expertise through Performance and Studio Production, Social and Sustainable Enterprise, and Innovation and Implementation. They participate in collaborative ensemble performances, develop original musical works, apply theoretical concepts to creative practice, and strengthen production and performance skills in professional studio environments. Students also explore entrepreneurship, innovation, sustainability, and responsible business while optional modules allow specialisation in areas such as music business studies, spatial sound, music perception, performance management, and sustainable management. In the final year, students undertake a Creative Project and Research Project, allowing them to investigate a specialist area aligned with their career goals while planning, managing, and delivering a professional creative event, recording, or artistic project. Core modules in Freelancing Skills and Working for Yourself and Developing a Global Enterprise prepare students to establish freelance careers, launch creative businesses, manage projects, and operate successfully within the global creative economy. Optional modules such as Music Portfolio, Global Business and Strategy, and Developing Leadership and Management provide further opportunities for professional development. Throughout the programme, students strengthen their musicianship, creativity, recording and production expertise, research, leadership, teamwork, communication, project management, and entrepreneurial skills while applying their learning in practical settings. By integrating music, business management, and entrepreneurship, the course prepares graduates for careers in music performance, recording, production, composition, music technology, arts management, event management, creative entrepreneurship, consultancy, and leadership roles across the music and creative industries.
