COURSE CURRICULUM

The Business and Creative Writing programme provides a balanced curriculum that develops students’ expertise in creative writing, publishing, entrepreneurship, and business management across three years of study. In the first year, students establish a strong foundation in creative writing by studying writing craft, publishing, storytelling, marketing, entrepreneurship, and finance. Through modules such as Introduction to Creative Writing and Publishing, The Workshop, and The Story, students develop professional writing, research, editing, and communication skills while gaining an understanding of the publishing industry, authorship, self-publishing, and digital media. They also strengthen their commercial awareness through business modules in marketing, finance, and enterprise, learning how creative ideas can be developed into successful business opportunities. In the second year, students focus on advanced writing techniques, publishing, innovation, and responsible business practices. Core modules include The Long Workshop, Writing and Publishing Non-fiction, Sustainability and Responsible Management, Managing Performance through People, Social and Sustainable Enterprise, and Innovation and Implementation. Students develop long-form writing projects, strengthen structural editing skills, and explore ethical leadership, corporate governance, stakeholder engagement, climate change, global social responsibility, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A wide range of optional modules allows students to specialise in areas such as copy-editing, short fiction, children's and young adult writing, gaming, poetry, teaching English, and contemporary literature. In the final year, students prepare for professional careers through core modules in Freelancing Skills and Working for Yourself and Developing a Global Enterprise, while selecting specialist options including self-publishing, business in the creative industries, contemporary publishing, independent writing projects, leadership, global business strategy, genre studies, and advanced creative writing. They develop practical skills in entrepreneurship, freelancing, business planning, publishing, leadership, and enterprise while learning how to transform creative ideas into sustainable careers and businesses. Throughout the programme, students strengthen their creativity, communication, critical thinking, research, project management, leadership, and commercial skills while building a professional writing portfolio. By integrating creative writing with business management and entrepreneurship, the course prepares graduates for careers in publishing, journalism, editing, content creation, copywriting, marketing, communications, media, freelance writing, business development, entrepreneurship, and leadership roles across the creative and commercial sectors.
