COURSE CURRICULUM
The Law and English curriculum offers an interdisciplinary programme that combines legal education with the study of literature, language, and culture, enabling students to develop strong analytical, communication, and professional skills through Joint, Major, or Minor pathways. In the first year, students study core English modules including Theorising Literature and Meaning, Enlightenment Literature, and Mutants and Monsters: Interpreting Fantasy, alongside core law modules such as Constitutional Law and Civil Liberties, Legal Skills and Practice, and Administrative Law and Human Rights. These modules introduce literary criticism, critical theory, textual analysis, constitutional law, human rights, and practical legal skills while strengthening research, writing, advocacy, and analytical reasoning. At the intermediate level, students can choose from English modules such as Literature, Identity and The Real, Modernism, Nineteenth-Century Realism, Poetry and Revolution in the British Romantic Period, and Research in Practice, while also selecting law modules including Criminal Law Principles and Application, Criminal Practice and Property Offences, Law and Business in Context, and European Union Law and its International Context. These subjects deepen understanding of literary theory, poststructuralism, gender studies, postcolonialism, criminal law, business law, and the relationship between domestic and international legal systems. In the final year, students further specialise through advanced English options such as After the Modern: Existentialism and Postmodernism, The Art of Crime, Colonialism and Independence, Gender and Identity in Contemporary Literature, Tragedy, Modern and Contemporary Poetry, and Riots and Rebels: Studies in Intercultural Drama, alongside law options including Employment Law, Company Law, Evidence, Family Law and Practice, Human Rights in a Global World, International Law and World Affairs, Commercial and Consumer Law, Intellectual Property Law, Sustainable Development and International Business Law, and Domestic Abuse. Students may also complete an English Independent Study, producing an extended dissertation based on independent research under academic supervision. This flexible curriculum develops advanced research, critical thinking, legal reasoning, and communication skills, preparing graduates for careers in law, publishing, journalism, education, public policy, communications, cultural organisations, and postgraduate study.
