COURSE CURRICULUM
This Economics and Education Studies degree combines the application of economic theory with a multidisciplinary understanding of education, exploring how policy, curriculum and learning systems are shaped by historical, sociological, psychological and philosophical perspectives. In economics, you will build a strong foundation in microeconomics and macroeconomic concepts, learning how markets function, how firms make decisions, and how economic data is used to understand real-world issues such as inflation, employment and public policy. You will also develop practical analytical skills through modules in data analysis, using tools such as Excel and statistical techniques to interpret and present economic information, with a focus on applying theory to real datasets and current economic trends in both the UK and global economy. As you progress, you will undertake more advanced study in applied microeconomics, macroeconomics and economic policy analysis, alongside opportunities to specialise in areas such as financial markets, international banking, sustainable economic growth and public sector economics. A major feature of the degree is the applied economics project, where you conduct an independent, real-world research study, often working with external organisations to produce client-style reports, strengthening your research, communication and consultancy skills. Alongside economics, you will study education through modules such as sociology of education, teaching and learning theories, and educational change, critically examining traditional and progressive approaches and how social inequality and policy influence educational outcomes. The programme is strongly research-informed, with staff bringing current academic and industry insights into teaching, and students encouraged to develop their own independent research interests. Overall, the course develops analytical, quantitative and critical thinking skills, preparing you for careers in economics, policy analysis, education, consultancy, public sector organisations and research roles where understanding both economic systems and social structures is essential.
