COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Economics curriculum is designed to develop students' economic knowledge, analytical ability, and practical business skills through a progressive three-year structure. In the first year, students establish a strong foundation by studying Finance and Business Performance, Academic and Digital Skills for Professionals, Introductory Microeconomics, Introduction to Macroeconomic Concepts and Data, Introductory Quantitative Analysis, and Economic Policy Analysis. These modules introduce core economic principles, financial accounting, business performance evaluation, quantitative techniques, and policy analysis. The Finance and Business Performance module assumes no prior accounting knowledge and equips students with essential skills in preparing financial accounts, analysing business performance, interpreting financial statements, evaluating costs, and understanding sources of finance to support effective managerial decision-making. In the second year, students deepen their understanding through modules including Current Debates in Applied Economic Theory, Applied Intermediate Microeconomics, Public and Third Sector Economics, Applied Intermediate Macroeconomics, and Data Analysis, with optional studies in Principles of Logistics and Supply Chain Management or Convergent Media. These modules examine contemporary economic issues, economic history, public sector economics, applied economic theory, and advanced data analysis while addressing the practical skills demanded by employers. In the final year, students further enhance their expertise through core modules such as Applied Economics Project, Economics of Sustainable Business Growth, and International Business Economics, alongside optional modules including Investing and Financial Market Behaviour, Financial Risk Management, International Banking, International Entrepreneurship, International Purchasing and Supply Chain Management, and Marketing Across Cultures. The Applied Economics Project enables students to undertake an independent research project by applying economic theory, statistical analysis, data collection, and research methods to real-world business challenges. Students also gain insight into the work of professional economists and business consultants, learning how to analyse complex economic issues and communicate findings effectively to clients. Overall, the curriculum combines economic theory, financial analysis, research, data interpretation, and practical application to prepare graduates for successful careers in economics, finance, consultancy, banking, government, international business, and policy development.
