COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Commercial Photography curriculum develops your creative, technical and professional abilities through a structured programme that prepares you for careers in the commercial imaging industry. In your first year, you will study core modules including Photographic Practice, Photographic Studio Production – People, Photographic Studio Production – Objects, Histories of Photography and Theories of Photography. You will build a strong foundation in camera operation, exposure, composition, lighting and image production while learning industry-standard image editing, colour management, file organisation, analogue processing, professional printing and digital workflows. Alongside technical skills, you will explore the historical and contemporary development of photography, developing the ability to research, experiment, analyse and communicate visual ideas while producing high-quality photographic work in response to creative briefs. Through studio practice, reflective journals and portfolio development, you will gain confidence in both practical and conceptual photography. In your final year, you will further specialise through core modules including Photography in Practice, The Photographic Project and the Independent Development Project, supported by optional strategy modules in areas such as digital media, social practice, materials, curatorial practice, creative industries and critical studies. Photography in Practice focuses on preparing you for professional commercial work by combining personal creative direction with industry expectations. You will undertake negotiated projects, live client briefs, competition entries and collaborative projects that reflect your career ambitions while exploring innovation, ethical practice and commercial problem-solving. The module encourages experimentation, creative risk-taking and critical reflection while strengthening your understanding of audience engagement, market trends, client expectations and the commercial value of photography. Regular tutorials, peer reviews and professional feedback sessions help refine your creative vision and technical expertise while supporting the production of an industry-ready portfolio. Throughout the programme, you will contextualise your work through historical and contemporary research, develop advanced planning and project management skills, and build a professional portfolio that demonstrates originality, technical excellence and commercial awareness. By graduation, you will possess the creative confidence, technical proficiency, business knowledge and professional experience required for careers in commercial, advertising, fashion, product, editorial, corporate and freelance photography or for further postgraduate study.
