COURSE CURRICULUM

The Business Management BA (Hons) at the University of Derby follows a progressive curriculum that develops students’ knowledge of business operations, leadership, strategy, and professional management across three stages of study. In the first year, students complete core modules including Understanding People in Organisations, Operations, Supply Chain and IT, Business Economics, Finance and Business Performance, Developing an Enterprising Mindset, and Principles of Marketing. These modules provide a strong foundation in organisational behaviour, business economics, finance, marketing, operations, supply chain management, information technology, and entrepreneurship while helping students understand how individuals, teams, and organisations perform in modern workplaces. During the second year, students study core modules such as Sustainability and Responsible Management, Personal and Professional Development, Data Analytics for Business, and Employee Engagement and Performance, alongside optional modules including Global Logistics Planning, Talent Management, Managing Financial Resources, Creativity and Innovation, Digital and Social Media, Social and Sustainable Enterprise, Project Strategy, and Personal Finance. This stage develops analytical, leadership, digital, ethical, and professional skills while exploring responsible management, corporate governance, sustainability, stakeholder engagement, climate change, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In the final year, students complete core modules including Global Business and Strategy, Developing Leadership and Management, and The Business Consultancy Project, with optional modules such as Marketing Across Cultures, Comparative International HRM, Financial Statement Analysis, International Entrepreneurship, Retail Distribution Logistics, International Purchasing and Supply Chain Management, Brand Impact and Popular Culture, Creating Business Opportunities, and Economics of Sustainable Business Growth. Students examine international business strategy, global trade, foreign direct investment, leadership, corporate governance, and strategic decision-making while undertaking consultancy projects that address real business challenges. Throughout the programme, students strengthen their problem-solving, leadership, communication, teamwork, research, data analysis, and strategic planning abilities through practical projects and industry-focused learning. Graduates leave with the knowledge, practical experience, and professional skills required for careers in management, marketing, finance, human resources, consulting, entrepreneurship, operations, supply chain management, and a wide range of business sectors, while also being well prepared for postgraduate study and professional development.
