COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Social Work programme is designed to prepare students for professional practice by developing the knowledge, values, and practical skills needed to support vulnerable individuals, families, and communities. A central focus of the course is the integration of theory with real-world application, helping students understand how social work principles operate within complex social, legal, and ethical contexts. In the first year, core modules such as Attitudes and Values introduce key sociological perspectives on identity, family, culture, and inequality, while also encouraging students to critically reflect on their own beliefs and how these may influence practice. Contemporary Issues in Social Work and Preparation for Practice Learning further develop awareness of modern social challenges and the expectations of professional practice, while Social Work Law provides essential understanding of legal frameworks governing safeguarding and intervention. In the second year, Human Growth and Development builds knowledge of life-span development and its application to practice, supported by Practice Learning 1, which offers structured field experience in real social work settings. Research Methods for Practice strengthens students’ ability to engage with evidence-based practice, while The Trilogy of Abuse explores complex safeguarding issues. In the final stage, Practice Learning 2 provides advanced placement experience, alongside specialist modules such as Safeguarding Adults and Protecting and Safeguarding Children and Young People, ensuring readiness for frontline practice. Students also complete an Independent Study, demonstrating their ability to critically investigate a relevant social work issue. Across all levels, the programme emphasises anti-oppressive practice, ethical responsibility, safeguarding, and reflective learning. By combining academic study with extensive placement experience, the course aims to produce confident, competent, and socially aware graduates who can meet the demands of contemporary social work practice and contribute effectively to improving wellbeing and social justice in diverse communities.
