COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Animation programme at the University of Derby develops students into creative and technically skilled animation professionals through a combination of practical production, critical research and industry-focused learning. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in animation by studying the principles of animated movement, animation production, pre-production and visual development, and critical approaches to animation and computer-generated imagery. They learn essential techniques such as frame-by-frame animation, 2D keyframe animation, 3D modelling, observational drawing, story development and the classic principles of animation, including squash and stretch, anticipation, overlapping action, secondary action, straight-ahead action and pose-to-pose animation, while exploring historical and contemporary animation practices. In the second year, students strengthen their creative and professional abilities through advanced animation production, professional practice, animation applications and contexts, and research methods in animation and visual effects. Case studies, workshops and independent research help develop critical thinking, problem-solving, project management and an understanding of current industry trends and production techniques. In the final year, students specialise by completing an independent research project, negotiated studies, specialist animation practice and portfolio development. They undertake a self-directed research project linked to their creative interests, critically analyse academic and industry sources, and produce a professional portfolio that demonstrates technical expertise, artistic identity and career readiness. Throughout the programme, learning is supported by studio-based workshops, tutorials, collaborative projects and continuous feedback, encouraging experimentation, innovation and personal creative growth. Students gain experience using industry-standard digital tools while developing skills in storytelling, character animation, visual communication, research, presentation and production management. Opportunities to engage with live projects, exhibitions, competitions and industry professionals further enhance employability and prepare graduates for careers across film, television, games, advertising, visual effects, motion graphics and digital media.
