ABOUT UNIVERSITY

The University of Derby is a public university in Derby, England, with origins dating back to 1851 as a teacher training institution and gaining full university status in 1992. It evolved through multiple mergers of art, science, teacher training, and technical colleges, including Derby College of Art and Technology, Derby Lonsdale College of Higher Education, and Derbyshire College of Higher Education. Today it serves around 18,000 higher education students along with further education learners, offering more than 300 academic programmes across undergraduate, postgraduate, foundation, and professional levels. The university’s motto is “Experience is the best teacher,” reflecting its strong focus on applied learning, employability, and industry engagement. It has affiliations with organisations such as Universities UK, University Alliance, Erasmus, and several professional bodies. The main administrative and teaching base is in Derby city, with a multi-site campus structure including Kedleston Road (business, science, sports and student services), Markeaton Street (engineering, computing, design and media), Britannia Mill (fine art, fashion and creative arts), One Friar Gate Square (law, criminology and social sciences), and the Cavendish Building (business school). In addition to the main Derby campuses, it operates a Chesterfield site focused mainly on health and healthcare education, particularly nursing and clinical training, and previously had provision in Buxton, which is now primarily used for further education through Buxton and Leek College. The university expanded significantly in the 1990s after gaining university status and continued growing through mergers and new facilities such as Britannia Mill and the University Library. In recent years it has developed specialist centres like the Nuclear Skills Academy in partnership with industry, particularly Rolls-Royce Submarines. The University of Derby is known for strong links with employers, practical teaching methods, and courses designed to prepare students for careers in fields such as business, computing, engineering, health sciences, law, education, psychology, art and design, and tourism.
