ABOUT UNIVERSITY
The University of Chester is a public university located in Chester, England, and is one of the oldest higher education institutions in the country. It was founded in 1839 as Chester Diocesan Training College by prominent figures in the Church of England, including future Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone, making it the first purpose-built teacher training college in the United Kingdom. Teaching began in 1842 with a small intake of male student teachers at the Parkgate Road site, which remains part of the university today. In 1921, the institution became an affiliated college of the University of Liverpool, with Liverpool awarding its degrees for many decades. Despite facing possible closure during the 1930s, the college survived and continued to grow, gradually expanding its academic scope. Women were admitted for the first time in 1961, and during the 1960s and 1970s the institution evolved from a teacher training college into a broader higher education provider, offering undergraduate degrees in arts and sciences. It was renamed Chester College of Higher Education to reflect this wider role. Further expansion took place in the 1990s with the introduction of nursing, midwifery, theology, postgraduate programmes, and doctoral study, alongside significant campus investment. In 2002, the university expanded geographically through the acquisition of a campus in Warrington. Chester gained its own degree-awarding powers in 2003 and achieved full university status in 2005, becoming the University of Chester, with the right to award research degrees granted in 2007. Since then, the university has continued to develop its research profile, with several subject areas recognised for internationally significant research. Today, the University of Chester operates multiple campuses across Chester, Warrington, and Shrewsbury, offers a wide range of foundation, undergraduate, and postgraduate courses, and is recognised for its teaching quality, holding a Silver rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework.
